Sikhcess Food Drive At National Gurdwara
On Friday, November 16 40 volunteers gathered at National Gurdwara and prepared 1,663 food packages for the homeless. The following morning, a team of 12 volunteers delivered these food packages to 7 homeless shelters in DC. Despite having a vast Sikh community in the DC metropolitan area, most of the donations came from volunteers who not only invested their time and effort but also bore the financial burden. With the funds donated by these dedicated individuals, we were able to increase the number of meals from our initial projection of 500 to over 1,500. In addition we were able to add a second snack item to each food package. The larger Sikh community, however, must play a greater role in future drives if we are to help greater numbers of the less fortunate. Sikhs in 23 cities spanning Canada and America also delivered meals to the homeless on Saturday. Collectively, 46,450 food packages were prepared and delivered in commemoration of Guru Nanak Ji’s Gurpurab Parkaash. We would like to thank the volunteers and Sangat for contributing funds and food. Finally, I would like to recognize the Sikh Youth and Adults who organized and executed the DC campaign: Harjit Singh, Bhupinder Chawla, Gagandeep Singh Saini, Harleen Kaur Singh, Harpreet Singh, Khushwant "Romi" Bhatia, Manpreet Singh, Mona Kaur Singh, Navjit "Navi" Sanghera and Sunmit Singh. These Sevadars spent countless hours fundraising, collecting donations, purchasing supplies, budgeting, public relations, contacting shelters, recruiting volunteers, etc. Based on the positive change created by this drive and the enthusiasm of our volunteers, we will be conducting similar Seva-oriented projects in the near future.
