Welcome To The National Gurdwara Website
The National Gurdwara is the first Gurdwara to be right on Massachusetts avenue. The Grand opening was held in August 2005. Every Sunday the Diwan begins at 11:00 am through 1:15 pm. There are many activities during and after the Diwan including Punjabi class and Kirtan class taught by the Bhai Shaibs. The Bhai Sahibs, Bhai Surinder Singh, Bhai Joginder Singh, and Bhai Balbir Singh are very friendly and there Kirtan lifts your spirits and makes you want to pray along with them.
The National Gurdwara is dedicated to preserving and practicing
Sikhism, the fifth largest religion in the world. The Gurdwara is located on the
historic embassy row and is across the street from the National Cathedral. The
National Gurdwara is proud to have the only Nishaan Sahib (Sikh flag) flying in
the nation's capital. The Gurdwara facility is the largest in the Washington
D.C. area with a size of over 21,000 square feet, and is complete with multiple
workshop rooms in the lower level, as well as bathrooms and kitchens on each
floor. The largest kitchen is located in the main langar hall, a place where
anyone can receive a free meal. The Gurdwara was constructed in this manner in
order to allow Gurmat retreats and educational seminars in addition to the
normal kirtan diwan schedule. Due to the space available, the Gurdwara will be
able to continue to serve the region through community service. Furthermore, our
goal to educate the Sikh community and the youth will continue to be at the
center of our objectives. Through external community projects such as blood
drives, clothing drives, and interfaith programs, we wish to strengthen our ties
with our local community and promote Gurmat among our Sikh youth.
